My husband & I currently live and work in California but plan to full time RV when we retire.  We wish to give up our California residency in favor of somewhere without income tax.  If we can officially change residency prior to retiring than preferrably we'd like somewhere without sales tax when we buy our rig.  Any/all advice on the topic is greatly appreciated.

I am domiciled in FL but work 6 months in CA every year.  Though we do pay sales tax, there is no personal property tax  or inheritance tax.   Registerring auto/truck, RV is much less expensive than CA.  Just registerred 3/4 ton pickup for $42.10 and 32' 5th wheel for $37.10.  Unlike TX, we do not have any inspection and I can register on line.  My mail is with a service in Lake City and this is my official address for tax purposes and voting.  FL has PIP auto insurance which can make insurance a little more expensive than CA, but overall I found it easier to stay in FL than go with any other state.  Good luck finding the right residence for you.  Happy camping!    SusanCool

Yikes, I too am retired and I never even thought that there might be states with less of an impact on me as far as taxes and other withholdings might be concerned. I might have to see about changing my own long term residence.

South Dakota and Texas are by far the "friendliest" in terms of a domicile state. My wife and I will probably go with S Dakota. No state income taxes, low sales tax, small fees for registration of vehicles, no state vehicle inspections, and mail forwarding services are the main reasons. Good luck, Dan
