RV Camping Blog: RV Travel - Living out of a suitcase…
Monday, August 21st, 2006With only eleven days to go until we leave in the RV for Iowa, I was drinking coffee this morning, thinking to myself, “That’s almost two weeks away. I’m organized again, the house is clean… I’m taking the day off. Packing the motorhome can wait.”That was almost what I did.
It was a soothing day outside, just eighty degrees - almost miraculous for June in the deep south; and Bob and I spent the morning in the back yard, enjoying the fresh cut grass and the blooming results of his spring labor.
After lunch, I put my bare feet on my desk, checked email, stretched in lazy luxury… nothing on my “to do” list at all. I downloaded some music, a bundle of Wayne Dyer lectures, a funny new ringtone for my cell phone. Loading the iPod is serious fun. I still can’t believe I have 1063 songs and files on it, and it’s only 1/4 full - and my iPod is an old-timer compared to my daughter’s, which will hold 60 GB of music and video. What a world. What an ecstatic treat to carry every song I have ever treasured on one little gadget in my pocket… So I did that for a while.
Around 2pm, I had been as lazy as I could possibly stand to be. WAY back at the back of mind, the niggling little thought kept creeping in, “You still haven’t unpacked everything from the lake. If you wait, the motorhome’s going to be a real mess… remember, there’s still a pantry full of dry goods that is begging to be put in order…” That voice whispered through another hour of “playing” at my desk, until at last - I caved in. I would at least vacuum the coach, change the sheets, and get all my shoes out of the bottom of the closet. I always have too many shoes on board!
It’s crazy, I know. Here I’ve been complaining that I am tired of living out of a suitcase, ready for a few weeks at home, etc., etc. Yet here I am at home, thinking only of the road ahead…
Everyone else was occupied this afternoon, so I took the vacuum cleaner and the motor home keys, cranked up the generator for AC, and it was great. Maybe I’m sick in the head. Maybe I just really do need to get away and “unplug” from the office, our campgrounds, and business in general. Just being in the motor home - in the driveway - felt like I had escaped!
As soon as I began the clean-up chores, I got a burst of energy that felt fantastic. I was a cleaning maniac, getting every tiny corner of our Winnebago Adventurer spotless, beginning to think ahead to June 15 or so. I am really, really looking forward to this trip. This is the first just-for-fun trip we’ve taken in over two years. Okay, so it’s Iowa. It’s not Paris, and it’s not exotic, but I really love this particular trip.
So after all, it was a productive, RVing kind of day. Tomorrow we’re off for a day trip to our Lake Bruin rv park to check in with Larry and Bonnie, and catch up on what’s been happening since we’ve left. Since we’re playing hooky from the office, I’ll probably have time tomorrow afternoon to stock up on necessities for the trip; candles, books, movies, and maybe even another house plant for Bob to complain about - Lowes has some very colorful begonias outside. Cross your fingers that nothing comes up to prevent us from going! We need 300 new parks this year, and especially in Iowa…
