Well, I now understand why some people abhor zoos.  We went the the "Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo" in Monroe.  A lovely title... I only wished it matched the actual place.  What an abomination.  Vincent and I walked outta that place SO darned depressed.  If we could have rounded up all the poor animals and taken them with us, we would have.  They are so unhappy and I believe unhealthy.  The whole zoo stunk to high heaven.  Animal environments are confined, dark, dirty, and filled with algae laden water supplies.  Animals were usually alone (except for the rats running in and out to steal their food...I've NEVER seen so MANY rats in my LIFE!)  The male lion had about 6 tumors growing on his underbelly.... and many of the animals were nevously pacing back and forth in short lines.  It was sad.  If you're in Monroe and looking for something to do... DON'T do the zoo.  DO go to the Beidenharn museum and gardens, DO go to Black Bayou... Both are beautiful.

I have ALWAYS hated zoos.  Those poor animals trapped for our entertainment.  So unfair.  There are some better zoos - natural habitats, no bars, just huge ditches to keep the animals in.  But they're still CAPTIVE.  I hope that you report this to the SPCA.

What a sad turn of events for the poor unfortunate animals.  I wonder what kind of funding is available for their care.  I remember as a child visiting every zoo of any size from Maine to Florida.  My Dad made sure we stopped to rest at some animal habitat whenever and where ever we traveled.  Those were fun times but I do remember some places were not so nice.  I thought environmentalists and animal rights people had eliminated deplorable conditions.  There was a show on TV about all the zoos in the hurricane areas that were being rebuilt and that seemed to be beneficial for all concerned.  Perhaps this zoo was not as fortunate to have funding to rebuild.  Strange though that administration did not find other shelter after all this time.
